Many carsExterior Angled View come with a very cool safety feature that sometimes gets over looked. Literally, we look at it every day and 95% of the time don’t know its there! Auto-dimming mirrors -electrochromatic!

So I’m going to give a little back ground, then explain why this is a good feature to have. Driving during a dark, eerie night, on a road with no natural or man-made lighting may be fun, as long as you and your car are the only ones on that road. When an incoming vehicle approaches, its headlights turn into your eyes’ worst enemy. When it comes from the front, for brief second, everything turns black. When it comes from the rear, your vision retracts, desperately trying to battle the glare of the other vehicle’s headlights. Dimming mirrors are intended to counteract the Troxler Fading Effect. This phenomenon occurs when you try to focus your vision to a single point in space for more than 20 seconds. This will make a stimulus outside the range of sight fade away. According to studies conducted to reveal glare effects on the eyes of the drivers, the Troxler effect increases driver reaction time by up to 1.4 seconds. This means that when traveling at 60 mph, it would take the driver 123 feet to see and react to road hazards. Dimming mirrors used in the automotive industry are fitted with sensors to detect the intensity of the light. Usually, there are two sensors, one pointed at the front and the other at the rear. The interior mirror’s sensors and electronics control the dimming of both interior and exterior mirrors. When they detect a change in light intensity, they trigger an electrical charge ,applied to the glass through a low-voltage power supply. The electricity travels through an electrochromic gel in between the two electrically conductive coated pieces of glass which make up the mirror. As a result, the mirror darkens accordinly to the light detected by the sensors. TCS Button ShotSome cool technology has come out recently and is becoming more standard in many cars and SUV’s. Electronic Stability Control (ESC). This safety features like I said comes standard with many vehicles now! Usually cars have traction control (TCS) and anti-lock brake system (ABS). However, in order to have ESC, the vehicle must have ABS and TCS. ESC and TCS are built on the Anti-lock Brake System, and all three use the same wheel sensors. In addition to the basic wheel sensors, electronic stability control systems typically require a yaw rate sensor, lateral acceleration sensor, and some method to detect the

movement of the steering wheel. Traction control, which is almost self-explanatory, monitors the traction on the drive train tires. So if you have front wheel drive, the sensors monitor and if the tires start to slip, it lowers the power delivered to help counter-act the loss of traction. Like anti-lock brakes and traction control, electronic stability control is an added safety measure. Electronic stability control systems consist of a number of sensors that compare a driver’s input with the way a vehicle is actually moving. If an ESC system determines that a vehicle is not responding correctly to the steering input, it is capable of taking corrective measures. Individual brake calipers can be activated to correct oversteer or understeer, the engine output can be modulated, and other actions can be taken to help the driver retain control. These systems won’t protect you from careless driving, but they can help keep you on the road under adverse conditions. According to the IIHS, electronic stability control reduces the risk of multiple car, single car, and rollover accidents. The reduction in fatal single vehicle rollovers is the most dramatic, and drivers with ESC are 75 percent more likely to survive those accidents than drivers who don’t have ESC. Another reason to care about ESC is the fact that it may be able to save you money on your insurance premiums. 2014 RAM 2500 TRADESMAN CREW CAB-Style

Yesterday we discussed the Ram 2500 SLT Crew Cab, today we have the Ram 2500 Tradesman Crew Cab! Much like the SLT, this Tradesman has crew cab doors and a mid box bed (6’4″). So this truck still has plenty of rear passenger leg room and also allows for the back seats to fold down. There are many differences though. The tradesman comes with less features but offers a little more durability! Out of all the Ram 2500’s the Tradesman has the highest towing capacity with 17,900 lbs. 2013 RAM 1500 TRADESMAN/EXPRESS REGULAR CAB-Body Styles

Last week I discussed the body styles of the Ram 1500, today I will finish up the 1500 series and move on to the 2500’s. The most known body style is the regular cab style. This is a two door truck and can hold up to 3 passengers! The bed length is 6’4″, so the mid box. It also comes with a long box (bed) which is 8′ in length. Both bed lengths offer the same interior volume! According to Ramtrucks.com  “The Long Box gives owners the option to haul more without sacrificing cab volume or comfort. It offers more forward cab room than all other trucks in the Ram 2014 1500 lineup.” Great news for those who are interested in the regular cab/long box combo! So this is the 2014 Ram 1400 Tradesman/Express Quad Cab. Much like the crew cab, this truck has four doors. The biggest difference being the size. You will notice that unlike that crew cab, the doors on the quad cab are smaller than the driver and front passenger doors. However, the quad cab features reversed hinged doors allowing for a wider opening when loading and unloading cargo! Definitely a plus for the quad cab style! Leg room in this style is a little under 6 inches shorter than that of the crew cab. This cab still seats up to 6 passenger just like the crew cab, so if you are fine with this minor restriction of the quad cab, then these are the trucks for you! Ram Trucks come in many different shapes and styles! I will be going over them the next few days just to make drivers familiar with each kind and see which they like best. Today is the Ram 1500 Crew Cab! Crew Cabs can easily be confused with the Quad Cabs but there is a difference which sometimes goes unnoticed. The most noticeable difference is the rear door. On the Crew Cab the rear door is very simliar in size to the driver and passenger doors. This allows for extra leg room, unlike the Quad Cab where the leg room is about 6 inches shorter. It doesn’t sound like a big difference but when you are the back seat, it is. The next difference in the 1500’s is the bed. This happens to be the short box (short bed). There is the Short Box, Mid Box and Long Box. Since this is the short box, it is 5’7″ long! The Crew Cab gives passengers increased comfort and capacity, with the most passenger legroom in the Ram lineup. It’s a great option when you’re hauling your guys and your gear to any job site. So many of us know we want 4X4 (Four-Wheel Drive) but don’t really know what it is or how it works exactly! Well, today I’m going to do my best to explain it! Most trucks and SUV’s come with 4WD these days, which is a great feature! So having a vehicle with 4WD means that the vehicle’s engine and transmission is capable of driving all four wheels at one time. This is great for traction while driving off-road in difficult conditions like mud, snow, sand or a mixture of slick conditions, however; it won’t do much for the driver on ice.  The vehicle is basically redirecting power from the transmission to both the rear and the front wheels at the same time. Almost all 4X4-enabled vehicles require drivers to shift into four-wheel drive manually with a lever and small gearing shifter mounted next to the main gear shift, or in luxury off-road vehicles, there’s a button or buttons to push. Usually, vehicles with a 4X4 system only use two-wheel drive to get around in town or on dry pavement – until the going gets tough!! I will be going over each part of the Uconnect system throughout the next couple of days! Uconnect Access is a huge part of the success this system has had. So the driver will have access to 9-1-1 to report an accident and any medical emergency on road by pressing the button located behind/infront of the rearview mirror. Road side assistance is also a button away, located in the Uconnect menu on the 8.4 inch touch screen display! A huge bonus, is Stolen Vehicle Assistance, which reports the location of the vehicle to the police upon a stolen vehicle

Keep in mind, all of these Uconnect Access features are also available on your computer or smart phone with installation of the app! So with your phone, from inside your house or the grocery store, you can unlock, start and set off the panic alarm. Very convenient! Access allows for Wifi Hotspot or purchase of 3G capabilities! Pretty cool if you ask me.  Yelp comes standard with Access, which puts top-rated shops and restaurants on display, the driver picks one, and Uconnect puts the directions in the navigation. Last is hands-free voice text! An awesome feature for those of us who love to text!
